Treasure Principle – her review

The Treasure Principle: Discovering the Secret of Joyful Giving by Randy Alcorn is a great “little” book based on Matthew 6:19-21. Alcorn lays out 6 keys to the treasure principle that help us to realize that this earth is not our home and to show us how to be storing up treasures in heaven.

This is another book that is ministering to me exactly where our family is currently and providing biblical insight. As we have found ourselves with some extra income now that our mortgage is paid-off we have been praying for clarity on how to best use the money. I liked this statement by Alcorn

God comes right out and tells us why He gives us more money than we need. It’s not so we can find more ways to spend it. It’s not so we can indulge ourselves and spoil our children. It’s not so we can insulate ourselves from needing God’s provision. It’s so we can give – generously.

It is very tempting when Erik gets a raise or we have “extra” money to look around and see what things we lack or what things could be replaced with something better. It is easy to fill wiggle room in the budget with a bigger cable package or more toy money for the kids, but this is not what God is calling us to. In 2 Corinthians 9:10-11 it says

Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion.

That is my prayer, that I can be “generous on every occasion”. This book is great for everyone, no matter where they are on their giving journey and I highly recommend it.
